It is known that tire treads can be made of rubber compounds containing silica or carbon black, silica being used in the tread to improve tread rolling resistance and wear. A tire having a tread strip with asymmetrical ribs across its tread-wide central portion is described in European patent application EP 0 301 012 A2. Furthermore, it is known that a rib design in the tread strip or circumferential carcass can improve handling, and may reduce the risk of the tire rolling off of the rim due to the influence of the contact patch. It has also been observed that a cross-ply tire tread with solid circumferential and rib tread blocks provides improved rolling resistance and decreased wear. For example, it is known that the wear of a tire tread can be reduced if ribs are provided that extend across the width of the tread. It is well-known that rolling resistance and wear resistance can be improved in pneumatic tires by using a rib design in the tire tread.
